I first learned of Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter shortly after my return to the United States from Germany, where I had lived for 3 years. Living in Germany was an incredible experience, and I found that I had quickly fallen in love with the beautiful scenery and mountainous landscape, the Black Forest, the Castles, the European clothing trends, the German Decor, their many handmade arts and crafts – including some of the most intricately designed Cuckoo Clocks I have ever seen, the German culture and, of course, their amazing food.
Having lived in Weilerbach, Germany, for one year and then Kaiserslautern, Germany, for 2 years, I cannot even begin to tell you how much I had come to really appreciate the many different delicacies found in their delicious homemade rolls and breads, the bratwurst, the wiener schnitzel, the broiled Walleye, the smoked babyback ribs, and so much more.
When I had returned to the United States, I found myself missing the German culture and food so much, I was determined to find a good restaurant where I could go and dine at and once again enjoy the delicious flavors found in fine German Cuisine.
I found that at Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter, located in scenic Stillwater, Minnesota. Upon stepping through their doorway, I was instantly flooded with memories and immediately brought back to Germany with the decor, the dresses their waitresses wore, the amazing smell of fine German foods cooking, and the friendly European atmosphere.
As I sat down in my chair, I could not help but smile, feeling right at home with the German culture found here in Minnesota. Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter has a great variety of German foods you can order, and of course, ALL of them looked so delicious it was hard to choose one.
I finally settled on the Vienna style Wiener Schnitzel – a golden brown breaded pork cutlet served with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, and a Bavarian mixed salad. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the Wiener Schnitzel was amazing, melting in my mouth just as it had back in Germany.
You will find the very best of German foods here. If Brats are your favorite, you will enjoy their Sausage Platters which come with your choice of 2 Sausages such as Bratwurst – a mild browned pork sausage with hints of nutmeg and coriander, Knackwurst – a smoked beef sausage smothered with mild garlic, Metwurst – a smoked beef sausage with white pepper and mustard seed, or the Weisswurst – a mild white sausage made of veal, cream, and eggs. You will also enjoy the German potato salad and sauerkraut which comes with it as well.
For those wanting more than traditional German Brats, there’s Bayerishe Ripperl – center cut smoked pork chops smothered in German sauerkraut, and served with mashed potatoes.
